Gikuriro Program handed over FY 19 activities to Kayonza district

Through the celebration of the community ownership, Gikuriro Program has handed over FY 18-19 activities to the district of Kayonza for management and assisting activity sustainability.

The Deputy Chief of Party of Gikuriro Program told the district officials that the event was organized to celebrate strong achievement of the program this year.

“This day was planned to celebrate the strong achievements made this year. These achievements include water infrastructures and sanitation infrastructures established at different schools of Kayonza.” Dr. Yvonne Umurungi, the DCoP of Gikuriro announced.

The colorful celebration event was started by a guided official tour to different activities of Gikuriro in the community. The visit has reached to nutrition activities and Water and Sanitation infrastructures.

Among the nutrition activities visited include the fishponds established in Gahini sector, the inauguration of sanitation activities made of Menstrual Hygiene Management Room (MHMR), VIP latrines and Water harvesting System at Groupe Scolaire Kabarondo and the inauguration of water infrastructure at Rugarama village in Nyamirama sector.

Within water and Sanitation sector, Gikuriro has established 7 Water Kiosks, 4 boreholes and rehabilitated 15 water springs. The program has also and established sanitation facilities in Kabarondo and Ndego.

During the inauguration, Isirabahenda Denis, the Director of GS Ndego, has told the district and Gikuriro officials that they have been having toilets but they were few compared to the number of school children enrolled in this school and the MHMR constructed is also improved and having more facilities compared to the existing room.

The Country Director of SNV, Bernie Chaves, expresses his happiness to hand over water and sanitation facilities to the district and encourages students to protect these infrastructures and tell school management whenever there is a malfunction.
The event was also an opportunity to incentivize Gikuriro beneficiaries and Gikuriro volunteers for their outstanding performance.

Within Community Health Clubs, three villages of the same sectors were awarded 1,000,000 Rwf, 500,000 Rwf and 300,000 Rwf respectively. The DCoP encourages awards receivers to take advantage of this amount and invest them either in businesses or in improving what they are already doing.

Mr Harerimana Jean Damascѐne, the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs appreciated the good collaboration and Gikuriro interventions which are really bringing positive transformation in the lives of Kayonza Population. “You are tackling human security issues, you are supporting in water, hygiene and sanitation and you are contributing in malnutrition elimination.”
